To die to something one has acquired, stored up, to the things one has known, remembered, accumulated, to die to that requires energy. A mind that has experience every day, a brain that reacts to every movement of life, to die to that also requires energy. So it isn’t an intellectual thing. The intellect can never create energy. It creates energy in action, in doing something, in following an idea, in formulating and carrying that formulation in action, but that is not the energy of which we are talking. We are talking of an energy, a vitality, a force that is necessary to die every day so that the mind and the heart are fresh, new.
