Thought For Today 12 March 2023, J Krishnamurti

The questioner asks, ‘Thought goes on and on and on, all the time, endlessly; how is it possible to put a stop to it?’ If I said, ‘I don’t know,’ what would you do? I really don’t know. We have tried so many ways: going to a monastery, identifying ourselves with an image, an idea, a concept; or through discipline, meditation, forcing, suppression, trying to put an end to thought. Man has tried everything possible, tortured himself a thousand different ways, because he realises to think is to be full of sorrow. How is it to be done? The moment you make an effort to stop thought, it becomes a problem. Then there is a contradiction, which is, you want to stop it but it keeps on and on. So there is a contradiction, and that very contradiction breeds conflict. All contradiction breeds conflict. So what have you done? You haven’t ended thought, but you have introduced a new problem, which is conflict.
