Knowing that the word is not the thing and the description is not the described, I must go beyond the word. That means I must live what he says – not according to the pattern laid down by Buddhist scholars; I must deny all that if I am a serious human being, wanting to find not the truth of the Buddha, but in the teachings that have been handed down, there may be the seed of truth. I must have a mind that is unconditioned by Christianity. I must be unconditioned of modern so-called education; I must be unconditioned of my speculative desires. To find out, I must be free from all personal temperament, inclination and tendency. Then what I find is not Buddhist; it is truth. But none of us, or very few, are willing to do that.
