When the educator realises he is hurt and the child is hurt, he is aware of his hurt and the child’s hurt. Then the relationship changes, and in the very act of teaching mathematics or whatever it is, he is freeing himself from his hurt and helping the child be free of their hurt. That is education: to see that I, who is the teacher, am hurt. I have gone through agonies of hurt, and I want to help the child not to be hurt. He has come to the school hurt, so I say, ‘We both are hurt. Let us see, let us help each other to wipe it out.’ That is the act of love.
