Our minds, our hearts, our whole being is full of unsolved problems because we never come into contact with them directly. We are frightened to. To come into contact with anything, with nature, with the extraordinary beauty of a mountain, we must come close to it. If you are at a distance, at a great height, all mountains look alike: flat, one or two peaks sticking out. But when you come very close, you begin to see that there are valleys, waterfalls, the shape of the rocks, the beauty of a line. Then you are near, very close and in contact with what you see. But unfortunately, we never allow ourselves to come into close contact because we have isolated ourselves – ten different defences we have built up. All these defences, repressions and fears drop away on the instant – we are using that word purposely: on the instant, immediately – when you come into contact with the problem directly.
