Freedom is of the highest importance, and freedom cannot possibly be understood without intelligence. Intelligence can come about when the mind has completely understood the causation of problems and resolves them. The mind then is in a state of super-sensitivity, alertness, attention so that every problem is dissolved as it comes along. Otherwise there is no freedom, only a fragmentary, peripheral freedom that has no value at all. It is like a rich man who has plenty of money and says he is free but is slave to drink, sex, comfort, a dozen things. Or the poor man who says, ‘I am free because I have no money,’ but has other problems. Freedom is the absolute demand on the part of a human being – the demand and maintenance of that freedom – because only when there is freedom you can love. How can you love if you are ambitious, greedy or competitive?
