Inward attention is that state of constant watchfulness of what is going on inwardly, with equal precision, mathematically accurate, and a watching so that there is no distortion and therefore no interpretation or conflict – just a state of watching. Most of us do neither: outwardly, we are not mathematically accurate, we don’t give attention to the way we walk or talk. We are just ordinary people, and in that ordinary life we don’t give complete attention to anything, nor inwardly. So there is a sort of inattention going on all the time, both to the outer and the inner. This inattention is really the vital factor, not how to attend.
